Acceptable Public Behavior

  • Maintaining cordial relationships is a must.

  • Treat everyone with civility.

  • Great each other by making eye contact, then raising and lowering your eyebrows.

  • Do NOT raise your voice.

  • Avoid staring, break eye contact every now and then during conversation.

  • One may try to gain attention by brushing a finger against your eyebrow.

  • Do NOT put your hands on your hips when talking.

Business Attire

  • Clothing indicates one’s rank and status.

  • Suits with either an open neck white shirts or shirts with ties are standard for men.

  • White, long sleeved blouses and dark suits or skirts are standard for women.

Conversations and Networking

  • Small talk is important.

  • Filipinos are enthusiastic conversationalists.

  • Filipinos often prefer to respond to observations made by others.

Meetings, Presentations, and Negotiation Tactics

  • English is the common language for business transactions.

  • Several trips are required in order to close a deal.

  • Business card exchange is important with negotiation.

  • Filipinos must get to know you before negotiating business.

  • The pace of negotiation is much slower than that of the United States.

Dinner Etiquette

  • The person who issued the invitation normally pays.

  • If a female issue the invitation, businessmen will insist on paying the bill.

  • Arrive fifteen minutes after the time given on the invitation.

  • The host and hostess is the first to eat and drink. Then the guests may begin

  • Use the fork in the left hand and push the food onto the spoon in the right hand.

  • Tipping is common, even if it has already been added in the bill.

Other

  • Giving gifts are popular in the Philippines.

  • Use “Sir” or “Ma’am” if the last name is not known.
