Other Types of Interviews
Phone Interview
A phone interview is sometimes used as the first step of interviewing.
It enables the interviewer to talk with many applicants and narrow the
number of face-to-face interviews necessary. This type of interview may
also be used to get additional information from the interviewee after
the first interview.
Tips
- Make sure you are in an environment where you can refer to notes, take notes, and concentrate.
- Remove yourself from distractions.
- Remember it is acceptable to suggest an alternate time for the interview that works for both you and your interviewer.
- Have your resume and other important documents in front of you. Make a list of topics you would like to include in the phone conversation. Refer to these notes during the conversation.
- Consider standing. Standing has been shown to make you sound more professional.
- Fill silence with topic-related questions.
- Convey energy and enthusiasm in your voice.
Informal Interview
An informal interview can take many forms. This type of
interview can occur during informational meetings, dinners,
golf outings, and other fun activities. These events allow
you to interact with the company's employees in an informal setting.
Although the atmosphere is more informal, do not forget that your
behavior is constantly being evaluated.
Tips
- Relax, be yourself, and get to know the culture of the company.
- Keep your conversation informal, but make sure to ask about the company. Use the time to get to know others who work for the company.
- Avoid finger foods.
- Drink alcohol only after the interviewer does and only in moderation. It is perfectly acceptable to refuse alcohol. Absolutely stay away from alcohol if you are under the legal age.
