Team and Interpersonal Communication Skill Expectations

All UNI students must pass a course in oral communication prior to graduation. Most students admitted to the CBA will have already taken 44C:001 Oral Communication, or its equivalent.  

Minimum performance to receive a C or better in this course involves a range of competencies.  Several key skills are foundational to effective team and interpersonal communication:

1.3    Students will be able to analyze their own verbal and nonverbal messages and those of others.

1.4    Students will be able to detect and analyze language bias and prejudice.

2.3    Students will be able to apply effective communication strategies in various contexts.

2.5    Students will demonstrate an ability to work successfully with others in group situations.

2.6    Students will demonstrate effective use of negotiation, conflict resolution, and supportive communication behaviors.

2.7    Students will detect and evaluate the effect of different cultural perspectives on communication behaviors.

3.3    Students will demonstrate effective listening.

3.4    Students will demonstrate effective problem-solving and decision-making in a variety of contexts.

3.6    Students will demonstrate an awareness of the ethical responsibilities of speakers and listeners.

Team and one-on-one communication in upper-division CBA courses should conform to at least these minimum requirements. No grade better than a C should be awarded for conversational or team participation that deviates substantially from the minimum requirements of UNI's freshman communication course.

In addition to taking full advantage of classroom instruction, modeling and coaching, students in the CBA are expected to seek out opportunities to develop and practice their interpersonal and team skills. Graduating seniors should have developed a resume of team activities that includes meeting leadership, diverse team membership, and instances of effective conflict resolution.  


ORAL COMMUNICATION STUDENT OUTCOMES AND COMPETENCIES FOR ASSESSMENT

1. Students will develop thinking skills necessary for effective communication in a variety of contexts.

1.1    Students will be able to determine the phenomena that affect communication.

1.2    Students will be able to identify the interactive nature of communication and technology.

1.3    Students will be able to analyze their own verbal and nonverbal messages and those of others.

1.4    Students will be able to detect and analyze language bias and prejudice.

1.5    Students will demonstrate an understanding of culture and its impact on the communication process.

1.6    Students will demonstrate the ability to use critical and creative thinking in acquiring, organizing, interpreting, and applying information in their communication efforts.

2. Students will understand and apply the components of relational, intercultural, group, and public communication.

2.1    Students will be able to compare and contrast interpersonal, group, and public communication events.

2.2    Students will be able to apply communication concepts to their own lives.

2.3    Students will be able to apply effective communication strategies in various contexts.

2.4   Students will be able to develop and present interesting, attention-getting, well-organized     messages.

2.5    Students will demonstrate an ability to work successfully with others in group situations.

2.6    Students will demonstrate effective use of negotiation, conflict resolution, and supportive communication behaviors.

2.7    Students will detect and evaluate the effect of different cultural perspectives on communication behaviors.

2.8   Students will be able to utilize technology in preparation and analysis of communication messages.

3. Students will develop the skills required for understanding the roles of speaking, listening, and thinking throughout various areas of their lives.

3.1   Students will prepare messages and adapt communication style to the context and situation in which the oral communication occurs.

3.2    Students will be able to analyze the effect and value of messages from a variety of sources.

3.3    Students will demonstrate effective listening.

3.4    Students will demonstrate effective problem-solving and decision-making in a variety of contexts.

3.5   Students will demonstrate poise and confidence in the use of verbal and nonverbal messages in a variety of contexts.

3.6     Students will demonstrate an awareness of the ethical responsibilities of speakers and listeners.
