Write On! Business Students Earn Professional Certifications

UNIBusiness graduates offer the unique blend of qualities that employers seek: cutting edge business knowledge, strong work values and exceptional professional skills.

The first two are easy to prove with solid grades on a rigorous academic transcript, but it can be harder for students to show they have the professionalism to contribute immediately and confidently to a business organization.

For this reason, UNIBusiness encourages students to earn professional endorsements through the college's Professional Readiness Program (PRP). The Endorsement in Business Writing is the first of what PRP leaders hope will be many available to UNIBusiness students.

The writing endorsement process involves demonstrating certain skills to a team of business professionals and faculty. This includes hands-on tests of competence, such as document production, in-basket exams, presentations or demonstrations. "Recruiters already look at GPA or technical certification to evaluate business knowledge, and they can discern a graduate's values from campus activities, work history and community contributions. With the Professional Endorsement program, recruiters can now look for special expertise in key areas of professionalism," said associate professor of management Dale Cyphert.

Parker Harrington is the most recent student to have completed the Business Writing Endorsement through the Professional Readiness Program. Harrington is a senior marketing major and business communications minor with a certificate in entrepreneurship.

Harrington saw this endorsement as "an achievement for my present and future self. I currently feel a sense of accomplishment and success because I was able to complete the tests. I'll also be able to use this writing skill set and bring it to future work environments."

Harrington is keeping his options open when it comes to finding his first job after graduation, but he feels he is incredibly marketable because of this writing endorsement. "When a potential employer wants to know what's different about me, I can point to this endorsement and prove to them that I'm different. Business knowledge and solid values are two things that most business graduates will have just from coursework and campus involvement. I hope this Business Writing Endorsement will give me a leg up from my competition in regards to professionalism."
