MBA Teams Take on Consulting Projects

Three Iowa organizations were selected to work with teams of UNIBusiness MBA students as part of the annual Capstone Experience, a final consulting project that is required for completion of the MBA program.

This year students are providing consulting services to Western Community Homes, a collection of Life Plan Communities based in Cedar Falls, IA; Lincoln Savings Bank, a regional bank with headquarters in Reinbeck, IA, and La Porte City’s downtown district.

Last November, a total of eight businesses, community groups, and agencies were introduced to faculty and professional staff from the Business and Community Services division of the College. Some of those organizations will work students enrolled in senior level or MBA courses in the College, or with programs in the College’s outreach division of Business and Community Services.

The MBA Capstone Experience is a consulting project that requires students in the program to integrate and apply the principles and skills from the entire MBA curriculum. Each small team of students, working with faculty mentors, is expected to develop practical responses to real
business situations. Projects typically involve a strategic analysis, supported by research to address a question posed by the company.

Each year the University of Northern Iowa’s MBA program identifies potential clients for its Capstone Experience from businesses and non-profit organizations in northeast Iowa. Projects are conducted during the first half of each year, developed to meet the specific needs of the
client.  Organizations that would benefit from a consulting team to address strategic planning, marketing, operations, or feasibility questions are encouraged to contact Dale Cyphert, MBA Program Director, at (319) 273-6150 or dale.cyphert@uni.edu for information about becoming a Capstone client.
