ThriftGods Found Darian Jones

Happy National Entrepreneurship Month! Let's celebrate by learning a little bit about the student entrepreneurs at UNIBusiness. Here's one of our entrepreneurs:

Most college students spend their freshman year focusing on what classes they want to take, how to balance their new workload, and adjusting to college life in general. For one student, starting college at UNIBusiness was the opportunity to jump right into the process of establishing a business from scratch and working to make it grow. UNIBusiness senior Darian Jones (Accounting) spent the summer after his freshman year developing ThriftGods (, an online retailer of high-end vintage clothing.

ThriftGods began to take shape when Jones began buying clothes he considered "rare, vintage, and valuable from the thrift store and reselling these items for a profit," explained Jones. "The idea came naturally. I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur ever since I got a thrill from auctioning off my toys in elementary school, so being involved with the entrepreneurial environment here felt natural, and I knew it was something that I was going to do, no matter what."

The path Jones has taken would not have been the same without UNIBusiness. "My education at the UNIBusiness has prepared me for my future career in the corporate world and my future entrepreneurial ventures. The rigor and effort it takes for me to succeed in my business classes are setting me up for success for when I run into obstacles in the real business world," said Jones.

From the start of ThriftGods, the company has been under the guidance of UNI’s R.J. McElroy Student Business Incubator in the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC). Jones recently was awarded a scholarship and larger office space thanks to a donation from Grinnell State Bank. "My experiences at UNI have played a major role in finding resources for my business and connecting with possible employers after graduation," said Jones. "The future could take me anywhere, and UNI’s entrepreneurial environment gave me the resources to thrive."

Jones is featured in the premier issue of UNIBiz magazine which is planned to release in November.

UNIBusiness thanks Grinnell State Bank for their support in our student entrepreneurs!
