Joseph Miller serves as Head of the Department of Marketing and Entrepreneurship at the University of Northern Iowa. In this role, he provides academic leadership, oversees program development and advances the department’s teaching, research and community engagement initiatives. His efforts are directed toward ensuring that students receive a rigorous, practice-oriented education that prepares them to succeed in the fields of marketing, sales and entrepreneurship.
Miller is dedicated to creating dynamic classroom experiences for the department that blend theory with application, encouraging students to think critically while engaging with real-world business challenges. He has led the development of innovative experiential learning opportunities, including national sales competitions, industry partnerships and applied research projects that equip students with practical skills and professional confidence.
Through his research interests, he focuses on how businesses can structure and sustain effective sales practices and how entrepreneurial ventures can use marketing insights to grow in competitive environments. His work has been featured in the Journal of World Business, Academy of Management Journal and Harvard Business Review.
Miller is a member of professional organizations within marketing and sales and has served as an Alderman in Davenport, Iowa’s 7th Ward in 2021. A Detroit, Michigan native, he has a bachelor's degree from Grand Valley State University, an MBA from Wayne State University and his Ph.D. is from Michigan State University. He has had previous academic appointments at Rochester Institute of Technology and St. Ambrose University.
Through his leadership, Miller strives to strengthen UNI’s reputation for excellence in marketing and entrepreneurship education. By building strong connections between the university and the broader business community, he supports both student success and regional economic development.
