Community:
Sorensen has also been involved in numerous community activities. He has served on the board of The Des Moines Community Playhouse, as a Trustee for the Iowa 4-H Foundation, as a United Way volunteer, and on the board of Meals from the Heartland. He is an active member of Faith Lutheran Church in Clive.

John Sorensen has served as President & CEO of the Iowa Bankers Association since 1997. Sorensen provides direction to the Association's service companies, including Iowa Bankers Insurance and Services, Inc. and Iowa Bankers Mortgage Corporation. Sorensen joined the IBA in 1986.
Sorensen is past chairman of the Alliance of State Banking Associations and has served on the American Bankers Association Board of Directors. He has also served on the ABA Government Relations Council and on the Board of the ABA Insurance Association. He is a member of the Board and Executive Committee of Shazam, Inc., a national electronic funds transfer network. He is also past Chairman of the Graduate School of Banking in Madison, Wisconsin.
Sorensen is actively involved in state community and economic development initiatives. He is a member of the Board of Directors and Treasurer for the Iowa Business Council. He serves on the board of directors for the Iowa Business Growth Company, a Small Business Administration 504 lender, and Iowa Community Development, a certified development company. He also serves on the University of Northern Iowas Business School Executive Advisory Board and on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation.
Sorensen was selected to the 1995-96 Association of Business and Industry Leadership Iowa Class. He participated in the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Future Leaders Class and is a Past-President of the Iowa Society of Association Executives.
