Joseph Ugrin was born in Cedar Rapids and raised in Montana, where his family owned an aviation business. There, he learned about business and met interesting people from around the world. He pursued his CPA, and after 10 years in the accounting profession, Ugrin began a career in higher education.
Ugrin believes higher education should prepare students for success beyond the classroom. He provides an opportunity for students to excel in their academic pursuits by providing a learning environment that facilitates student participation and encourages open discussion and debate.
Hobbies & Interests
Ugrin enjoys spending time with family, pick-up basketball, old motorcycles, fishing, playing the piano and his dogs.
Managerial and Financial Accounting, Accounting Information Systems
Professor Ugrin researches human behavior and decision-making in accounting and information systems. He specializes in experimental and survey-based research, and examines questions like, “How do business people choose different types of accounting treatments? How does ethics and integrity influence their decisions? How do they formulate decisions to make investments in structures and technologies? How do they decide to spend their worktime?” He also researches the effects of educational practices and pedagogies on student learning. He is currently the associate editor for Advances in Accounting.
