Center for Real Estate Education‌

Iowa's premier four-year real estate education program.

A UNI real estate degree will prepare you for an exciting and challenging career in commercial or residential real estate, mortgage underwriting, asset management, brokerage and appraisal- to name a few. You may help make decisions involving tens of millions of dollars on a commercial building or a mortgage, or help a family find their dream home. No two days are ever the same.

Good business sense and an understanding of markets are essential for success in real estate. Therefore, learning how to make intelligent decisions is an important aspect of the real estate major.

As the only program of its kind in Iowa, UNI's real estate program has strong ties to the real estate industry. There are over 800 real estate alumni nationwide who currently work in real estate, many of whom are still active in the program. Many of our students go on to work with or for alumni who graduated with a finance or real estate degree from the University of Northern Iowa.

Commercial & Residential Careers

A career in commercial real estate involves the valuation and analysis, management, acquisition and disposition or loan servicing of office buildings, shopping malls, apartment complexes or any property that is used to generate a profit. Residential real estate involves buying, selling and servicing loans for single-family homes, condominiums and acreages.

Commercial Careers

  • Commercial Asset Manager
  • Commercial Lender
  • Commercial Appraiser
  • Commercial Sales Broker
  • Agricultural Land Broker
  • Commercial Mortgage Banker

Residential Careers

The income potential varies by discipline, but most entry-level jobs in the Midwest start in the $40,000 to $65,000 range.  Salary/bonuses can increase substantially as experience and network base grows.  Six-figure income/sales are attainable.  Brokerage and development careers will likely offer the most long-term income potential but come with more volatility earlier in your career.

“There's lots of different things that you can do in real estate. That variety appeals to a lot of people. Every building that exists, somebody had to visualize that building and then they had to create it, so there's a bunch of steps that happen along the way.”
