Deloitte Accounting Faculty Fellowship = Professor Dennis Schmidt

With the leadership of Jeff Provost ('84), nine accounting alumni who work at Deloitte pulled together to establish the Deloitte Accounting Faculty Fellowship in 2010. In addition to Provost, Amber Carman ('94), Matthew Davis ('90), Kim Felker ('93), Jason Flinn ('97), Aaron Grundman ('92), Mick Kane ('91), Christine Terhark ('92) and Debra Warner ('95) founded the fellowship to help the accounting department attract and retain quality faculty.

Professor Dennis Schmidt was awarded the first Deloitte Accounting Faculty Fellowship in recognition of his outstanding scholarship, teaching and service. Schmidt received his B.A. in accounting from Michigan State University, his M.B.A. from the University of Wyoming, and his Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His professional background includes work as a Certified Public Accountant at Knopp & Company in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Deloitte logoSchmidt first came to UNI in 1993, left for a short time in 2005 to teach at Montana State University, and returned to UNI in 2008.

Schmidt has published 40 articles in academic and professional journals, including the Journal of the American Taxation Association, Journal of Legal Tax Research, Advances in Taxation, Advances in Accounting Education, the Journal of Accountancy, Academy of Management Journal and others. He was one of the first academic accountants to research and work extensively with electronic tax databases and he was the creator of taxsites.com. His excellence in research was recognized in 2011 when he received the College of Business Administration Scholarship Award.

Schmidt teaches accounting information systems to both undergraduate and graduate students. He is a dynamic and innovative teacher and students rate his effectiveness among the highest in the College.

Schmidt has a distinguished record of service at UNI and is currently the representative to the Honors Program Advisory Board for UNIBusiness. He has served on a number of American Accounting Association and American Taxation Association national committees and served as webmaster for the American Taxation Association.
