Shahina Amin joined the Department of Economics in 2000 after teaching at Grinnell College, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Since joining the UNI faculty, she produced numerous publications focusing on child labor and gender employment issues in developing countries. She continues research on women's work and immigration issues.

Amin’s classes are usually conducted through lectures. She offers generous office hours to meet with students 1-on-1 as needed.

Hobbies & Interests:
Some of Shahina’s favorite hobbies include reading and watching historical fictions, listening to music, traveling, gardening and singing.

Research Interests

Shahina researches in the areas of economic development and labor economics. She focuses on child labor, immigration, and women's labor market issues, particularly in developing countries. Her recent publication was on pay gap between native-born and foreign-born doctors in the U.S. She is currently working on several projects which include female garment workers in Bangladesh, internet use by women, and youth employment in Canada.

Professional Accomplishments

Shahina’s publications have appeared in many journals including the Southern Economic Journal, World Development, Journal of Developing Areas, International Economic Journal, Journal of Economics (MVEA), and Journal of Socio-economics. She serves on the American Economic Association Committee on the Status of Women in Economics Profession (CSWEP), a prestigious appointment in recognition of her gender research. In addition, she received the UNI Business Faculty Teaching Award in 2012, the UNI Business Distinguished Service Award in 2016, Regents Award for Faculty Excellence in 2020-2021, MWOne Unique Academic Advising Award in 2020-2021, College of Business’s Distinguished Scholarship Award in 2020-2021, and the College of Business’ Exceptional Impact Award in 2021-2022.
