Professional Engagements

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) allows junior and senior-level accounting students to prepare federal and state tax returns and answer tax questions for community members and fellow students without charge.

UNI Business has also partnered with Farmers State Bank to allow undergraduate students to join a student Board of Directors. Student board members assist in decisions primarily regarding products and services that may be desirable for customers, witness the inner workings of a community bank and regularly interact with C-level officers of the bank.

Student members have the opportunity to analyze certain aspects of the Bank's financial statements and to review Farmers State Bank's loan underwriting decisions. Members also propose responses to loan defaults and generate ideas to market the bank to retain existing customers, attract new customers and develop new financial products.

Today’s global business environment demands a professional attitude, polished communication and presentations skills, excellent writing and reasoning skills, and organizational awareness. You cannot expect career success simply by earning academic credits; you must be prepared to apply your business knowledge in a professional setting.

Students are introduced to key professional expectations during required workshops in Business 1000 and 2000. Two additional levels of workshops, Business 3000 and 4000, provide hands-on training in more advanced skills.

Additional individualized skill development is available through the PRP Mentoring Program and include:

Undergraduate Research 

Research skills can impact your career in many ways. Plus, having your name on published research is a great way to build up a resume. The Undergraduate Research Program (URP) allows you to conduct and present research projects under faculty supervision.

Those who are selected for the program will receive a $750 stipend. Modest funding is also available for research-related expenses, such as supplies and travel; as well as additional travel support should your research be presented at a conference. Students typically apply for an URP Award in September, conduct their research during the academic year, and present their research to faculty and students at the URP Seminar in April.
